Open space is being lost
Open space is being lost

Originally appeared on "pottstownmercury.com"

As our open space problems become more apparent to many more people, the need to conserve large green areas, open areas and beautiful fertile farmland becomes more critical.

One problem I have noted are the many vacant stores and buildings in our area. An example is the Giant Supermarket Building at State Street and Route 100, as well as the TJ Maxx store, both now vacant and moved to the large Upland Square Mall west of route 100. The absence of these two stores in the old mall takes away much of the customer power this mall once had. Productive use of those areas now becomes questionable. This problem is accented by the new Giant Supermarket being built further north on Route 100.

This has been repeated over the entire area, leaving large merchandising buildings open such as the old Genuardi Supermarket Store on Ringing Hill along Route 663. There are many instances as these and it seems as though companies like Giant as well as similar corporations should have some responsibility in avoiding this waste. The Giant store stands out as one example.

Better land use procedures, all governments through zoning to help control this, and more consideration for our environment by land developers and builders are needed to help improve this situation. Lots of the remedies can't be legislated but depend on the sensibilities of all of us to avoiding much of this waste.
